If you’re used to getting regular massages, you’re probably wondering when you can get back on the table after your breast augmentation. But like many of your normal activities, you’ll need to ease back into your massage routine after breast augmentation at my plastic surgery practice in Richmond, VA.
To ensure lasting results, it’s crucial that after breast augmentation you avoid lying on your stomach for more than just a few minutes. This allows the incisions to heal completely without undue pressure put on them. We recommend avoiding massage for at least 6 weeks after your surgery. Let me explain why.
Implant Healing Process
When breast implants are placed within the body, the breasts form a natural “capsule” of tissue around them. The capsule acts as an internal bra that maintains the structure of the implant and keeps it in place. The capsule development process takes about 6 weeks to complete.
Once the capsules have developed and the implants are more stable, it’s safe to lie on your stomach again or have a massage. Before the 6-week mark, capsules are still quite delicate and easily damaged. It’s very important to give your breasts all the time they need to heal properly.
Managing Your Options
There are alternatives, though. Not all massages require you to lie on your stomach. You can enjoy a massage that focuses on your legs, arms, and head, and experienced massage therapists will be happy to accommodate you by positioning you on your back. Even when lying on your back, it’s a good idea to ask your massage therapist to avoid placing pressure on your shoulders and upper chest.
The same considerations apply to other treatments. A few of these include:
- Chiropractic services
- Skincare services for your back
- Any medical procedures that require you to lie on your stomach
Each of these kinds of procedures should all be postponed until at least the 6-week mark after your surgery, in order to preserve the results of your breast augmentation.
For many patients who undergo breast surgery, the most challenging part of recovery can be getting used to sleeping on their backs. For patients unused to this, I recommend getting into the habit several weeks before surgery. Many people find that back sleeping is more comfortable—and successful—with pillows positioned under their extremities for support.
Breast augmentation is one of my most popular procedures, and these patients tend to be some of the happiest and most enthusiastic. If you think the surgery might be for you—and you’re willing to skip a few massage sessions—I encourage you to check out my gallery of before-and-after photos. Of course, you can always contact my office to schedule your first visit, too.
